Ocean Science in the arctic

Dive into the science
quote

The Arctic is critically important for all life on Earth. It helps cool the entire planet, by reflecting sunlight and driving global ocean currents that distribute heat.

But the Arctic, and the millions of people and wildlife that call it home, is under threat. Through innovative ocean science and documenting our discoveries, this expedition will showcase what we’re at risk of losing.

ARCTIC TIPPING POINTS

At current levels of global warming, climate scientists predict we will cross critical thresholds that could lead the world onto an irreversible path. Onboard the Abel Tasman, we will journey through 6 of the Global Tipping Points to communicate this important message.

Ocean Plastics

Plastic pollution has been found from the surface to the very depths of the ocean, and in the most remote corners of the world - impacting not just wildlife, but us too. Our voyage will collect vital data to inform efforts to stem the plastic tide.

Ocean Acoustics

The underwater world is anything but silent. And sound is incredibly important for marine life. With the help of an expert sound-recorder, we’ll be capturing the sound of a changing Arctic.

ARCTIC eDNA

The Arctic is home to many unique and iconic species, both above and below the waves. But with increasing temperatures, we’re at risk of losing them. By collecting samples, we’ll be able to determine which species are where - even if we can’t see them.
